Captain CorY schemm (1993)

Captain Cory Schemm is a Supply Corps Officer in the United States Navy. Cory was a 1993 graduate of Maryvale High School and 1997 graduate of the US Naval Academy where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Economics and was a member of the Economics Honor Society. He also holds a Master’s Degree in Supply Chain Management from the Naval Postgraduate School. Schemm was commissioned in May 1997 and reported to the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations in the Pentagon. 


From 1990 through 1992, Cory Schemm excelled in academics and athletics at Maryvale. He won the Phil McConkey Award as the top football scholar in Western NY. He was also a member of the Maryvale Chapter of the National Honor Society. Schemm was a three sport star in football, basketball and baseball at Maryvale and to this day remains the only football player in Maryvale’s history to win the prestigious Connolly Cup which is given annually since 1973 to the top high school football player in Western NY. In 2017, Schemm also became the only Maryvale football player to have their jersey retired. 


While attending the Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD, Cory played Varsity Football for four years and was a member of the 1996 Aloha Bowl Championship Team. In that Championship game, Schemm set an Aloha Bowl game record in receiving yards (194) and leading the Midshipmen to a 42-38 comeback win over a loaded California team that included future NFLers Tony Gonzalez, Deltha O’Neal and Ryan Longwell.

Upon graduation from the Naval Academy, Captian Schemm’s shore assignments included Aviation Support Division Officer, Naval Air Station Lemoore, California; Naval Forces Advisory Branch, Office of Military Cooperation, US Embassy in Kuwait; F/A-18 Integrated Weapons Support Team, Naval Inventory Control Point, Philadelphia, PA; Supply Chain Management Directorate, Naval Supply Systems Command Headquarters, Mechanicsburg, PA; and Deputy Force Supply Officer, Commander Naval Air Forces, San Diego, CA. 


Captain Schemm’s sea tours include USS THEODORE ROOSEVELT (CVN 71) where he deployed in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM for a record 159 consecutive days at sea following attacks on 9/11, USS RAMAGE (DDG 61) as Supply Officer where he earned the Logistics Management and Retail Services Excellence Awards, and USS CARL VINSON (CVN 70) where he deployed to the South China Sea and Sea of Japan in support of deterrence operations and international presence in Asia-Pacific theater of operations. 

Personal awards achieved by Captain Schemm include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal (four awards), Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (five awards) and the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal. He was selected as Region Southwest Officer of the Year (1998) and is a recipient of the Vice Admiral Robert F. Batchelder Award (2001), two-time recipient of the Navy and Marine Corps Association Leadership Award (2003 and 2016), NAVAIR Program Manager’s Wingman Award (2010), and the NAVAIR Program Manager’s Meritorious Achievement Award (2011). 


In January 2019, Schemm was promoted to Naval Captain in a ceremony at the Buffalo Yacht Club. This title is the second highest rank in the Navy only behind the title of Admiral.


Captain Schemm has been married to his high school sweetheart Dana for 19 years and they currently live in Washington D.C.
