Cheektowaga Police Chief David Zack graduated from Maryvale High School in 1981. While at Maryvale, David competed on the Varsity Football Team for two years and the Varsity Wrestling Team for four years. He was named Captain of the Wrestling Team during his senior season, during which, he lost only one dual meet and finished 2nd in sectional competition.
Upon graduating from Maryvale, David attended Hilbert College and studied Criminal Justice. After graduating from Hilbert College he began his career in law enforcement as a New York State Department of Corrections Officer. It was in1987 that David made his decision to join the Cheektowaga Police Department.
After nine years on the force, David received his first promotion to Patrol Sergeant. In 2003, David was promoted again to Patrol Lieutenant. A year later he requested and received a transfer into the department’s Detective Bureau. As a Detective Lieutenant David managed the General Bureau but later saw his role expand to leading the Sex Offense and Crime Scene Investigation Units. His successes in these positions resulted in his promotion to Captain of the Detective Bureau in 2008. David then received his appointment to Chief of Police in 2011.
Chief Zack is currently the President of the New York State Association of Chiefs of Police. In 2017, he was appointed to the Board of Governors of the International Association of Chiefs of Police. In Erie County, David serves on the Board of Trustees for Central Police Services and the Board of Trustees for the Erie County Crime Analysis Center. He is also Chairman of the Joint Advisory Committee for the Central Police Services Training Academy. Additionally, Chief Zack serves as an adjunct instructor in forensic science and crime scene photography at his alma mater, Hilbert College.
