Jim Militello spent 40 years in the sports broadcast journalism field reporting from high-profile, world-wide sporting events.
The journey started from the Plains of Cheektowaga and brought Militello to Centre Court at Wimbledon, the backstretch at Churchill Downs, the wind-blown links of St. Andrews and the lush, carpet-like grounds of Augusta National.
During a 36-year career as a radio sports anchor and reporter for Associated Press Broadcast, Militello racked up an impressive resume of assignments.
It included 19 trips to the Masters where Jim covered Jack Nicklaus’ unlikely sixth win at age 46 and Tiger Woods’ first Masters title by a record-breaking 12 shots at age 21. Jim even got a once-in-a-lifetime chance to play Augusta National.
Jim’s 14 Super Bowl assignments included the Bills’ loss to the Giants in SB XXV and Buffalo”s SB XXVII loss to Dallas.
The 1969 MHS graduate earned assignments to 13 Olympics from Sarajevo to Seoul and Sydney to Lillehammer.
Mililtello’s list of assignments includes the British Open, Wimbledon, NBA Finals. World Series, Final Four, U.S. Open golf and tennis and Kentucky Derb, among others.
In 2012, Jim was honored by the New York State Society with the Charging Buffalo Award in recognition of his career achievement and relationship between Western New York and the Washington, D.C. Metro area. He joined Tim Russert, Wolf Blitzer, Jack Kemp and Marv Levy among other similarly honored.
The following year, Militello was recognized by the University at Buffalo Athletics Hall of Fame with the Distinguished Alumni Award.
Jim lives in the Northern Virginia suburbs of Washington, DC with his wife of 39 years, Jeannie.
